Short Functional Text

Short functional texts are types of informational texts to help the information receivers or readers grasp the information quickly. Since short functional texts are intended to make the readers understand the texts quickly, they are usually characterized by:
-          The use of clear, simple, and concise sentences.
-          Pictures or symbols
-          The use of particular words or letters.
Short functional text (SFTs) can be in the form of advertisement, invitation, caution,greeting card, shopping list, etc. 
 
Types of Short Functional Texts
1.     ADVERTISEMENT
·        Meaning of Advertisement:
A.    Advertisement is the act of advertising.
B.     Advertisement is a notice, such as a poster or a paid announcement in the print, broadcast, or electronic media, designed to attract public attention or patronage.
C.     Advertisement is any public notice, as a printed display in a newspaper, short film on television, announcement on radio, etc., designed to sell goods, publicize an event, etc.
D.     Advertisement is a public promotion of some product or service.
·        The Characteristics:
a)    Strategically sound
Every great advertisement is carefully directed to a certain audience, it is driven by specific objects, its message is crafted to speak to that audience's most important concerns, and it is run in media that will most effectively reach that audience.
b)    Have an original creative concept
The creative concept is a central idea that gets the attention and prevails in the consumer's mindset. A concern of creative thinking drives the entire field of advertising. Planning the strategy calls for creative problem solving, research efforts are creative; the buying and placing of the advertisements in the media (newspapers / television) are creative.
c)         Use exactly the right execution for the message
Good advertisers know that how a message is conveyed is just as important as what is being said in the advertisement. What is said comes from the strategy; whereas how the message is conveyed is a product of creativity and execution

a.          Promotion
b.         Communication
c.          Information
·      Commercial Advertising
Commercial advertising media can include radio, cinema and television ads, web banners, mobile telephone screens, shopping carts, bus stop benches, magazines, newspapers, posters,etc. Any place an "identified" to deliver their message through a medium is commercial advertising.
In making an advertisement keep the following points:
a.                   Language of advertisement :
a)      Using the correct or suitable words.
b)      Using the interesting and positive expression.
c)      Text of advertisement should be directed to the goals.
b.                   Content of advertisement :
a)      Objective and honest.
b)      Brief and clear.

2.    INVITATION
·        The meaning of Invitation:
A)    Invitation is the requesting of a person's company.
B)    Invitation is as an invitation to a party, to a dinner, or to visit a friend.
C)    Invitation is an inviting to come somewhere or do something.
D)    Invitation is the message or note used in inviting.
E)     Invitation is a spoken or written request for someone's presence or participation.       

The function of invitation is to ask some one to go to a place or to do something. We usually use the “invitation” in our daily life, for example if we want to hold an event like a birthday party . We use the invitaion and if we want some one to do something , like if we want our friend to help us. We use the invitation too.
There are 2 types of Invitation:
A)    Invitation Formal:
Formal Invitation is the official invitation usually written reply came from such institutions and companies etc.
B)    Invitation Informal:
Informal invitation is not an official invitation written or oral and this invitation is usually given to friends, family and others

3.   Caution
Caution is written or printed statement that gives information or a warning to people against certain acts in avoiding danger
The purpose :
a)      To give instruction/to instruct people
b)      To give direction
c)      to ask people to
d)      to advice/to suggest/to recommend people to
e)      to warn/to give warning        
    4.       GREETING
Greeting card is a letter (usually decorated with pictures) that are used to congratulate, pray for someone, and so on. The form of greeting cards such as greeting cards, greeting card grief / sympathy and get-well greeting cards.
The important things :
a)      Who is the sender who sent cards
b)      What is the author's purpose to send a card
c)       What is the relationship and the sender sent
d)      Why does the author to send a card

5.    SHOPPING LIST
Meaning of shopping list
A shopping list is a list of items needed to be purchased by a shopper, a list that you make of all the things you want to buy when you go shopping. The list may be compiled immediately before the shopping trip or incrementally as shopping needs arise throughout the week. The shopping list itself may be a scrap piece of paper or something more elaborate.

             a.   Short functional text is a type of text of which primary function is to convey particular information to  readers/hearers.
b.      This type of text is characterized by the use of simple, concise sentences, particular words, expressions, and symbols to make the information easily understood or remembered by the readers/hearers.
       c.    This chapter only covers some types of short functional texts, such as advertisement, invitation,     caution,greeting cards,and shopping list.
